Gate plaque reads: "Erected by Normans about
1210 but owned and occupied by MacEgans, for 300 years from 1350. A celebrated
Law School was conducted here by the MacEgans, a family of hereditary Brehons
and Ollaves. The Castle has been restored and is again owned and occupied by
the Egan Family"
